The COVID-19 global pandemic has put a pause on so many people’s plans. Restaurants, bars, theatres, and coffeeshops have been mandated to shut down in much of the United States. Several states are issuing shelter in place orders. Countless people are having to cancel basically any and all plans they once had.
I know several people who are having to cancel or reschedule international vacations, weddings, you name it. My husband and I had plans to go to Mexico, which obviously we cancelled. We then thought we might take a trip to the Grand Canyon to go camping, but again, that’s not happening. I can’t even imagine how other people feel who had to make the decision to change major travel plans or events.
Not gonna lie, my husband and I were pretty bummed about not getting to have a little vacation together. With him working from home and me already having asked for the time off from the hospital, I figured we could make the best of the social distancing and sheltering at home.
Since we can’t go on our vacations and we can’t go out for a date night, I wanted to carve out some time to have a special date day to break through some of the doom and gloom. Here are the top 10 at home quarantine date ideas to make your quarantine time with your partner a little special. It might actually turn out to be one of your favorite date night memories.
1. Have a Movie Night
Grab some snacks, dim the lights, and cuddle up for a movie night or tv series binge session for this stay at home date night. I know this seems like a very basic idea, but make it seem more like a date night out by really making it feel special.
This means really setting up your theater experience. Turn the volume up just a tid bit louder than you normally would. Make sure to put your phones away like you would at the theater. Treat yourself to some movie theater type snacks like popcorn and chocolate.
If you have the ability, make it feel extra special by setting up a projector to display the movie and make it feel more like the big screen. My favorite part about at home movie nights is that you can pause it to run to the bathroom or get more snacks without having to miss any of the good parts!
Obviously, Netflix has a great selection of TV shows and movies. Another great site that I enjoy using is FandangoNOW which has a good selection of the most recently released films. It is pay per view, but it’s date night, so you might have to splurge just a little.
2. Have a Game Night
Game nights can be a lot fun for a stay at home date. With a little preparation this could turn out to be one of your favorite dates. Having a little friendly competition and fun can be a great way to build a little… tension. Spending time being playful is great for rekindling the fun of the relationship and breaking out of the usual, same old patterns.
If you just have a deck of cards you could play two person games such as:
You could play a board game together like chess or checkers. You could also play more involved board games made for couples such as:
If you don’t already have a board game on hand, with a little planning and forethought you could order online so that you have it ready for your next planned date night!
Also, don’t forget that video games can be a lot of fun to play together. This is especially true if one partner enjoys playing video games and the other doesn’t usually. Step out of your norm and try to get started in the video game your partner enjoys. It could be a lot of fun for your partner to teach you how to play, and you might end up really enjoying it.
3. Cook a Meal Together
If you’re reading this, I am sure you have experienced the vast amount of panic buying that has been hitting every grocery store in the country. Shelves of canned items, potatoes, and toilet paper are completely bare. Even a lot of the fresh produce is scooped up soon after being restocked. This can make the idea of cooking together for a date night seem a little bit more difficult. Regardless of what the grocery stores may or may not have stocked at any given time, we should be reducing our trips out of the house except for when we are getting the essentials we need for the week.
If you are the type of person to plan ahead, find a recipe that you want to cook or bake with your sweetheart for your at home date night. Then, get those supplies when you make your weekly trip out to the store.
If you’re like me and you like to just wing it, then make your date night a challenge to cook something with the stuff you already have in your fridge. You could make this a competition between you and date to see who can make the best dish with whatever you have lying around. The winner doesn’t have to do dishes – better yet, save the dishes for tomorrow.
If you want some help finding an actual recipe that uses the food you have on hand, try a website like supercook.com that generates a recipe from the items you enter.
4. Fall Deeper in Love with These 35 Questions
New York Times released an article summarizing an essay by Mandy Len Catron titled, “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.” According to Catron, there is a psychologist that postulates that intimacy and love can be boosted between strangers through a series of 36 specific questions.
Whether you’re in a relatively new relationship quarantining together, or you’ve been with your partner for decades, answering these questions together can rekindle the flame in your relationship. Make sure to answer every question fully and honestly.

5. Test Your Knowledge of Each Other
Think you know everything about your partner? Well challenge your partner for a night of couples trivia to see how much you truly know. You could make some kind of wager to reward whoever ends up getting the most answers right.
You could also turn it into a drinking game where you have to take a drink for each wrong answer. There’s so many ways you could spin this game from the more mild to the more wild.
For ideas of trivia questions google “couples trivia” for literally hundreds of examples. A few questions to get the ideas flowing:
- Where did we kiss for the first time in public?
- How do I feel about public signs of affection?
- What are my 3 favorite qualities about you?
- When did I first realize I love you?
- What did I want to be when I was a child?
- What is my biggest fear?
- What is my proudest achievement?
6. Have a Spa Day
Comfortable robes, slippers, face masks, and a little pampering all sound absolutely perfect – especially with all of the stress of current affairs. Obviously we can’t be going out to the spa right now, but there’s a lot of ways to bring spa day to you.
Next time you’re at the store pick up some fun face masks or you can even make some face masks at home. There are tons of recipes online for super easy homemade face masks. One quick one you can whip up is just
- 2 tablespoons of honey
- ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon of turmeric
- A squeeze of fresh lemon
Just mix it all together and rub it on your face and let sit for 15-20 minutes. While you’re waiting you can sip on some wine.
If you have the ability to draw a bath for two, you can set the mood with some essential oils and candles. Wear your robes around the house as you pamper yourself and your partner during the date night. You can take a pitcher of water and add fresh cucumber and mint to make fancy spa water.
Take your spa day to the next level by taking turns giving each other massages. If you have some on hand, warm up some massage oil or lotion. If you don’t, try using some coconut oil or grapeseed oil with a couple drops of your favorite essential oil.
7. Take a Trip Around the World
Set up your computer, stream to your TV, or take turns on a VR headset touring the world’s most impressive and renowned museums. You can visit countries across the globe from the comfort of your house for FREE. Spend some time daydreaming about the vacations you can take together once the social distancing rules are over and done with. Just google “free virtual museum tours” to see what you can get access to, but some of my favorites are:
8. Start a New Hobby Together
Find something that you two can learn how to do together. You could start learning how to knit together. You could take this time to start jogging outside around the neighborhood. You could learn something new by finding a DIY project you could work on together, like reupholstering an old piece of furniture. Create something that you can decorate your home with.
You could do an at home paint and sip class. Grab a bottle of wine, get some art supplies, and then find a painting class online. You can always find a Bob Ross video and learn how to paint happy trees.
One really fun hobby you and your partner could start is acroyoga. Find some instructional videos online with different poses to practice. Acroyoga relies on a lot of trust and mutual balance and focus. This can be such a great way for you to connect with your honey and start a physical practice together.
9. Create a Date Night Planner
Brainstorm ideas for dates you two can do when this quarantining is all over. Create a list of restaurants that you haven’t tried yet. Take a look at the menus and plan out what you might want to try.
You can create a whole list of different ideas. A fun idea could be to plan out your date for your next few anniversaries! You could make different theme date nights like The Big Lebowski where you go bowling, make white russians, and then cuddle up and watch the movie! There’s so many different themes you could pick!
Feel free to plan out big dates or little dates! This could be a great list to have lying around for the future when you two are trying to figure out what to do for a fun date night!
10. Plan Your Next Vacation
Similar to #9 , the quarantine, social distancing, and isolation will come to an end. Take this extra time together to plan your next big, epic, adventure! It could be anywhere! Plan a big international trip. Figure out the best time of year to go for when the big festivals and events start happening again. Learn a little about the culture of the place you want to go, the must see things, museums, restaurants.
You could plan an epic road trip to make a stop at all of the national parks or make a Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives route. Your trip doesn’t even have to be big or far or expensive.
You could plan a camping trip at a local spot you haven’t checked out yet. Start planning now so that when everything starts getting back to normal you already have a great escape planned out.
How are you going to spice up your next Date Night?
There’s no denying that the coronavirus has put a damper on everyone’s routine. It is affecting the entire world. Instead of feeling defeated by it and letting the stress and isolation get the best of us, we can take this as an opportunity to reconnect with our significant other. Make a stay at home date night feel SPECIAL and really dedicate that time to each other. I have a feeling some of these at home quarantine date nights could lead to one of your most memorable and loved dates yet!
If you use one of these ideas, make sure to tell me about it in the comments!
